Because putting is such a crucial part of your overall golf game, it can have the biggest impact on your scores. The average golfer has the potential to drop at least 7 strokes from their game if they we to dedicate some real time to improving their putting. This putting tip will help with that.
One of the best parts about putting is that you can virtually practice anywhere, even your living room carpet. This becomes extremely useful in the winter months when us golfers tend to be stuck inside for months at a time.
If you were to ask any instructor what the best way to learn golf was, 99% of the time you'd be told to learn from the green to the tee. Putting, chipping, and shots from a 100 yards in should be the main focus of a beginners practicing. Because about half of your shots are taken from 100 yard in (more for beginners and high handicappers), it only makes sense that the majority of your practice be focused on this area.
The tendency for the majority of poor putters is to use way too much writs and hands. This causes the wrists to easily break down during the stroke. This is the most common cause for poor putting. I would say that if you could only ever use one piece of instruction, it should be to always focus on keeping your locked (but NOT tight). When the wrists break down it causes the putter face to strike the ball anywhere but square causing the ball to shoot off in any direction but the one you intended.
Good putters use a combination of their shoulders and arms during the entire putt. They completely eliminate any wrist action. Their shoulders, arms, and putter keep the same angle from address throughout the entire putt; back stroke - impact - and through stroke.
You should concentrate on doing the exact same with your stroke. Your putting stroke should be like that of a pendulum, a fluid motion taking the putter back and then through. When you focus on using your shoulders like this, your wrists naturally remain square through the entire stroke.
So the next time you address a putt think of this putting tip and use your shoulders, arms, and putter as one solid unbreakable unit.
